PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device (an applicator) having simpler structure for applying at least one 1st layer and at least one 2nd layer of a liquid or paste coating medium, particularly a water based pigment suspension, on a moving base. SOLUTION: The moving base (U) is a material web (14), particularly the surface (14a) of paper or a board web, in the case of direct coating, the device (10) is provided with at least 2 curtain applicator units (16, 22), each of which discharges the coating medium (18, 24) as a curtain or a veil (28, 30) moving substantially under gravity on the base (U) from discharge nozzles (16a, 22a). Two coating medium curtains (28, 30) collide with the base (U) with about 100 mm to about 500 mm interval (D).
