PURPOSE: A filter cover opening and closing apparatus for a vacuum cleaner is provided to open smoothly and easily a filter cover by operating a release button, and prevent an impact owing to an opening of the filter cover. CONSTITUTION: A filter cover(30) is moved rotatably and opened at front upper portion of a vacuum cleaner body(20) to replace a dust filter, etc. in a center of a hinge axis(22). An elastic member such as a torsion spring is interposed at the hinge, axis and supports a filter cover. A stopper(42) is formed at a front end of the filter cover, and locked each other at a stopper(44) of the vacuum cleaner body. If a release button formed on the body is pushed, a locking between the stoppers is released, and the filter cover(30) is opened by an elastic restoring force of the elastic member. A gear(32) is rotatably inserted at an exterior of the hinge axis, and the gear and the filter cover are rotated and moved simultaneously. A damping gear(34) is fitted at the gear.
