<p>Ice-building plant of the type in which ice is progressively accumulated on a refrigerating battery immersed in a tank from which a supply of chilled water is drawn; ice on the battery melts to provide additional cooling during peak demands for water and builds up again when demand is low. To increase the rate at which ice on the battery takes up heat from the water, turbulent conditions are created in the tank by injecting compressed air through sparge pipes underneath the battery in the tank. The compressed air may be supplied from a compressor via a pressure-regulating valve, the compressor intake drawing in cool air from near the water surface in the tank.</p> |
