PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically compensated film and a method for manufacturing the film having required characteristics uniformly distributed in the plane, and to provide a polarization plate and a liquid crystal display which use the film. SOLUTION: When the optical compensation film is manufactured, by biaxially stretching a thermoplastic resin film successively in the longitudinal direction and in the lateral direction, a process of reducing the lateral stretching rate, after the film is drawn in the lateral direction is added. The obtained optical compensation film shows 0 to 500 nm retardation in the plane (Re=(nx-ny)d) and 0 to 500 nm retardation in the thickness direction (Rth=(nx-ny) d), satisfying Re/Rth<1, where d is the thickness of the film, nx, ny are the principal refractive indices in the film plane with the condition nx>ny, and nz is the principal refractive index in the thickness direction. |
