PURPOSE: A side mirror for an automobile is provided to enable a driver and/or a passenger see and avert obstacles under a door on opening the door by illuminating downward the door. CONSTITUTION: At least one night illuminating lamp(12) is provided on the bottom side of a side mirror(10). A sensor is provided to sense an intensity of illumination on the exterior of an automobile. A door switch is provided to sense an open or close position of the door. A controller causes the night illuminating lamp to be turned on when a receiver of a keyless entry system receives an unlocking signal, and the intensity of illumination sensed from the sensor is maintained under a standard level, while the controller causes the night illuminating lamp to be turned off when the door switch senses the open position of the door. A transparent lens(14) is provided with the lower portion of the illuminating lamp.
