<p>The roller (1-6) includes a metal drum (35) and at least one bandage surrounding it in a circular-cylindrical configuration, made of fiber-reinforced plastic. At room- and working temperatures, drum and bandage are stressed against each other, the drum being under compression, the bandage (36) under circumferential tension. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the carbon fiber reinforced plastic is adjustable. The fibers are circumferentially-orientated. The combined modulus of elasticity of the composite covering is 15000 N/mm2> or more. The angle the fibers make with the roller axis is +/- 75[deg] to 90[deg]. Further alternative angular relationships are detailed, to control the ratio of axial- and circumferential expansion coefficients. The non-dimensional coefficient of expansion is less than 8 x 10->6> /[deg]K in both directions. Further structural details are included. A finishing surface is added. Wires are tensioned up to 40 N for this purpose. Operational centrifugal forces are taken into account. The roller working length is up to 1500 mm and the drive is high speed, the circumferential velocity reaching up to 40 m/s. The covering garniture has a point density exceeding 900 points per square inch. Fixed carding components are added, and a carding cover. It is a feed-, offtake or a carding roller.
