PURPOSE: Contacting area between a vane and a vane housing is reduced to reduce friction between the vane and the vane housing. CONSTITUTION: A space portion is formed in a vane housing(110) having a sprocket(115) in outer circumference driven by rotation of engine. The space portion is divided by a vane arm(225) of the vane fixed to a cam shaft into a retard chamber(140) and an advance chamber(130). The vane rotates by hydraulic pressure difference between the retard chamber and the advance chamber to the housing to vary valve timing. The vane arm has a convex portion(210) in its middle portion mounted with a friction reducing member. The friction reducing member is a roller(215).
