PURPOSE: A muffler for a compressor is provided to reduce noise of various frequencies by allowing the noise to be attenuated at sound absorbing materials. CONSTITUTION: An expansion shell(130) is formed with a rotating body of ellipse, which is made by rotating an elliptical curve at 360 degrees with respect to the center of the major axis of the two-dimensional ellipse. The inlet and outlet sides of the expansion shell(130) are communicated with each other. An inlet stage is disposed at one of the focus points of the ellipse, and a resonance hole(132) or sound absorbing material is installed at the other of the focus points of the ellipse. Noise of various frequencies is attenuated through the resonance hole(132) in the second focus point at the sound absorbing material, or is attenuated at the sound absorbing material installed at the second focus point.
