PURPOSE: An engine control method in operating an air conditioner of a vehicle is provided to control engine rpm optimally by adding compensation factors according to changes of engine rpm in turning on the air conditioner. CONSTITUTION: An electronic control unit calculates the air amount by adding the air compensation amount to the basic air amount in turning on an air conditioner and turning off a thermostat in case of the elapsed time to be over the critical value, and controls the air amount(ST21-ST27). The electronic control unit keeps air amount control during learning delay time of a compressor, and turns on the compressor(ST28). The operation time of the compressor and the air amount are controlled by learning the air compensation amount and the compressor delay time in turning on the air conditioner according to difference between engine rpm and the target rpm(ST29-ST35). The engine rpm is controlled optimally by adding compensation factors according to engine rpm.
