PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of useless electric power consumption and to prevent an observer viewing the outer world from feeling botheration when images are displayed with high image display specifications regardless of whether the observer observes the display images or not. SOLUTION: The image display device for guiding the images displayed on an image display element 104 to the eye 110 of the observer through an optical system 105 is provided with a state changeover means 108 for changing over a first state set or adjusted in the states (resolution, display luminance, frame rate, the size of the displayed images) relating to the image display for the purpose of image observation and a second state of the display characteristic lower than the display characteristic of the first state.
