PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform reading with high sensitivity and high resolution at a high speed with a radiation image reading method and device which detect stimulated luminous light by irradiating a stimulable phosphor sheet in which radiation energy is accumulated with exciting light by scanning the sheet in a horizontal scanning direction and vertical scanning direction. SOLUTION: The exciting light powers with which the adequate sensitivity is obtainable relating to respective reading pitches in the vertical scanning direction are respectively determined and an exciting light power control means 60 controls the intensity of an exciting light source 1 and the scanning speed of a scanning mechanism (not shown in Figure), i.e., a reading speed, according to these exciting light powers, thereby performing the reading of the stimulable phosphor sheet with the exciting light powers meeting the respective reading pitches.
