An internal combustion engine is provided that can burn two fuels. When one fuel is a liquid pilot fuel and the other fuel is a gaseous fuel, there can be advantages to keeping the fuels separate and injecting each directly into the combustion chamber through its own independently operable fuel injection valve. With two fuels there can be a problem with finding physical space around the engine to route piping to and from the fuel injection valves. An apparatus is provided that comprises a liquid-fuel supply rail, a gaseous-fuel supply rail, a drain system with a shared drain rail for collecting both liquid-fuel and gaseous fuel, and a venting device. for venting gaseous fuel collected by the drain rail. The method comprises separately delivering a liquid fuel and a gaseous fuel into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine by delivering a liquid fuel at injection pressure to a liquid-fuel injection valve through a liquid-fuel rail, and actuating the liquid-fuel injection valve to introduce liquid fuel directly into said combustion chamber, delivering a gaseous fuel at injection pressure to a gaseous-fuel injection valve through a gaseous-fuel rail and actuating the gaseous-fuel injection valve to introduce gaseous fuel directly into the combustion chamber, and collecting in a drain railliq uid fuel and gaseous fuel from said liquid-fuel injection valve and said gaseous-fuel injection valve, and directing liquid fuel to a liquid-fuel storage vessel, and directing gaseous fuel from the drain rail to a vent pip e. |
