PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device with which characters are inputted in less number of times of operations when inputting the characters by using ten keys in the various kinds of mobile equipment such as a portable telephone. SOLUTION: The character input device is provided with the ten keys and is for inputting Japanese by Roman character conversion using the ten keys. The ken keys are constituted so as to mutually switching an input mode between a group 1 and a group 2 corresponding to the button operation when Japanese input and alphabets for Roman character input are respectively allocated to the respective groups. The device is provided with an automatic mode switching means for automatically and successively switching to the input mode different from the group selected first between the group 1 and the group 2 when the Japanese input by the Roman character conversion.
