PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve-timing adjusting apparatus which restricts generation of striking sound, at starting of an engine, accompanying lock releasing due to hydraulic pressure entraining air therein. SOLUTION: When a hydraulic pressure charged to a hydraulic pressure supply passage 20 reaches a prescribed pressure level, a receiving pressure at a large-diameter portion 15b of a lock pin 15 becomes larger than the sum of energizing forces of two urging members 17 and 24. As a result, the lock pin 15 is pushed back in the direction of releasing, and a sliding member 23 also moves backward, at the same time as with the backward movement of the lock pin 15. Since a moving stroke of the sliding member 23 is very much shorter than the moving stroke of the lock pin 15, a rear end surface of a small-diameter portion 23c of the sliding member 23 abuts against a rear wall surface 16c of a back pressure chamber 16 in a locked state, in which the small- diameter portion 15a of the lock pin 15 is still remaining engaged with an engaging hole 19, and since an opening area of a discharge hole 18 is restricted, the back pressure discharge speed becomes very slow.
