PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protect ring capable of easing the restriction relating to the arrangement position and the dimensions of an air-intake and exhaust valve and allowing optimum design according to the application of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: An annular protect ring 9 is secured in the ring-like step section 8 which is provided in the internal peripheral face of the upper end of the cylinder liner 2 of a diesel engine to scrape away the carbon deposited to the top section of a piston 4. Four valve recesses 12 are provided in the internal peripheral face of the protect ring 9 to prevent the protect ring 9 from interfering with the opening and closing motion of the air-intake and exhaust valve 6. A positioning pin 14 is inserted in a through hole 13 of the protect ring 9 in the radial direction, and the head section 14a is fitted into the positioning groove 15 provided in the upper edge of the ring-like step section 8 to prevent the rotation of a protect ring 9.
