PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of starting an open shield machine capable of obtaining sufficient propulsive reaction even when only a reaction wall of low height can be installed in starting an open shield machine from an open-cut starting shaft. SOLUTION: In this method of starting an open shield machine for propelling the open shield machine 1 from the open-cut starting shaft 12, propulsive reaction is taken by support pressure by a vertical support pressure wall 16 installed on a back surface of the open-cut starting shaft 12 and friction resistance of a floor plate 15 of a starting base 13 to propel the open shield machine 1.
