PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which improves the stop accuracy of an image reader and suppresses the image quality from deteriorating during reading of a manuscript. SOLUTION: A CPU 304a turns on a lamp 107 (S42), reads the stores an output signal from a CCD 117 (S43), while moving a first optical table 109 and a second optical table 112 located at a home position, and determines whether data below a threshold exists in the read data (S44). If the read data below the threshold continues over a specified number of pixels (S45), the CPU decides a read position mark to be present and set s a manuscript read position (S46) and saves it in a backup RAM 303 (S47). If no read data below the threshold exists, it determines that no read position mark to be present on a manuscript guide plate 104 (S49) and changes the detection and setting method of the manuscript read position.
