A balloon for a balloon dilation catheter which may be used in a stent implantation system is disclosed. The generally tubular balloon has an end wall configuration which is designed to accommodate initial expansion of the balloon in an axial rather than radial manner. The ends walls of the balloon extend between the catheter and a central elongate portion. The balloon ends are sealingly attached to the catheter inwardly of the ends of the central portion so as to form an inverted portion with respect to the balloon. In this way, the extent to which the end walls can expand radially outwardly is limited as expansion of the balloon, if any occurs axially outwardly at the ends of the balloon. Thus, the central portion is permitted to expand uniformly radially. Axial expansion of the end walls eliminates or at least results in far less trauma to the portions of the vessel which extend beyond the targeted area. The stent implantation system includes a balloon catheter having a balloon as aforesaid with the inverted end wall configuration which promotes more uniform radial expansion of the balloon, and hence the associated stent.
|
