A dynamic image of a passing vehicle is picked up, in a specified frame cycle, by means of a CCD camera disposed in a movable housing installed on a roadside of a roadway and processed to determine the diameter of a wheel and the overall length of the vehicle and then the type of vehicle is determined from the determined diameter of the wheel and the overall length of the vehicle and recorded. Each frame of the dynamic image is processed. When a vehicle is detected from a vector generated through movement of a large number of feature points in the image, correlation between the shape of each vehicle type prepared in advance and the standard template of the tire of the type corresponding to the size is calculated about the tire image of the vehicle, a template having the smallest difference is found, and the type of the tire is determined.
