PURPOSE: A 1+1 bidirectional switch operation method of an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) exchange is provided, which prevents a call disconnection, by acquiring a minimum time required in the bidirectional switch operation using an MSP(Multiple Section Protection) protocol. CONSTITUTION: According to the method, a failure judgement process(S1) judges continuously whether there is a signal failure(SF) in an operation side in an active state. A priority judgement process(S2) judges whether there is a priority to the present signal failure when there is a signal failure in the above failure judgement process. A system judgement process(S3) judges whether it is an equal system with a protocol having an equal operation when it is judged to be a priority signal error in the priority judgement process. And a self station switch process(S5) performs a switching after judging whether a protection part in a standby state is normal, when it is judged to be the equal system in the system judgement process, and informs the switching to a counter station.
