PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simply configured liquid crystal optical modulator for sharply reducing a driving voltage while securing mechanical strength, and also to provide a liquid crystal display device using this liquid crystal optical modulator. SOLUTION: Synthetic resin 7 configuring resin fiber 1 is provided with a side chain 8 easily oriented in parallel with the alignment direction of a crystal liquid molecule 2 in a voltage OFF status (figure 1 (b)). A liquid crystal molecule 2 on the surface of the resin fiber 1 is fixed to the alignment direction(long axial direction) of the side chain according to the orientation effects of the side chain 8. The synthetic resin 7 is configured to be easily movable since the resin fiber 1 is made thin, and when the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecule 2 is changed in a voltage ON status, the side chain 8 of the synthetic resin 7 is made cooperatively movable by an inter-molecular force with the liquid crystal molecule 2 (figure 1(c)).
