A catalyst for producing an oxygen-containing unsaturated compound from an alkane, characterized by comprising molybdenum, vanadium, titanium, and either antimony or tellurium as essential active elements. The catalyst is preferably represented by the following formula (1) or (2). Mo1.0VaTibXcYdOe (1) Mo1.0VaTibXcYdZfOe (2) (In the formulae (1) and (2), X represents antimony or tellurium; Y represents niobium, tungsten, or zirconium; Z represents lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, magnesium, calcium, or strontium; a, b, c, d, e, and f, indicating the atomic proportions of the respective elements, satisfy 0 < a < 0.7, 0 < b < 0.3, 0 < c < 0.7, 0 </= d < 0.3, and 0 < f < 0.1; and e is a number determined by the oxidized states of the other elements.) The catalyst has high activity. It is especially suitable for use in the production of (meth)acrolein or (meth)acrylic acid from the corresponding alkane through vapor-phase catalytic oxidation.
