Surface-modified fillers comprising reactive inorganic fillers modified with amphiphilic aminoplast-ether-(co)polymers containing central aminoplast units based on melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde derivatives with polyoxyethylene side groups, the aminoplast units being separated by polyoxyethylene chains. Surface-modified fillers comprising reactive inorganic fillers modified with amphiphilic aminoplast-ether-(co)polymers of formula (I). An Independent claim is also included for methods for the production of surface-modified fillers comprising: (a) contacting a solution or suspension of (I) with a reactive filler (as dry powder, moist mass or suspension), removing the solvent or dispersant and optionally milling the product; or (b) mixing the reactive filler with (I) in the form of a melt; or (c) dry milling the reactive filler with (I). Z = central aminoplast units based on melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde derivatives; n = 10-500; R = -(OCH2CH2)mO-S; m = 5-500; and S = optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl.
