Production of nanowires comprises growing wires by chemically reacting in a liquid solution to a length which corresponds to two hundred times their diameter; and contacting one end to a solid body. An Independent claim is also included for a device for making visible and manipulating wires in the sub-micron region. Preferred Features: The wires are freely oscillated in the solution during growing. The solution is a citrate compound.
