The invention relates to a process for the preparation of .alpha.- aminosubstituted carboxylic acid amide compounds and/or their salts comprisi ng reacting a carboxylic acid amine of a primary amine with a nitrosylating age nt in the presence of a base followed by hydrolysis to give a hydroxy imino derivative followed by hydrogenation and if necessary converting a base or acid of the .alpha.-aminosubstituted carboxylic acid amine into one of its salts.
