A predetermined pattern of voltage is impressed on a liquid crystal for the unit period of driving the liquid crystal to drive it, and an impressing pattern corresponding to each gradation data is set by consideration of the integral value of a transmitted light amount at each point of the crystal when each impressing pattern is impressed on the liquid crystal. This process enables a fine gradation display even if the liquid crystal is driven by only the on-off operation of the maximum of a rated voltage. As a result, the liquid crystal is driven at a high speed with a multigradation display.
