PURPOSE: A communication terminals for simultaneously transmitting and receiving voice data and graphic data in two ways using a single telephone line and a method thereby are provided so that two terminals can communicate each other while always maintaining the screen of an identical content, when they give and take graphic data for communication. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer detects an off-hook state through a loop current detector. If the off-hook state is detected, the microcomputer sets a modem to an SVD(Simultaneous Voice and Data) mode, and judges whether an SVD ring tone is supplied from the other party. If the SVD ring tone is supplied, the microcomputer sends a response command to the other party through the SVD modem. If correspondence is started between two modems, the microcomputer judges whether a preset time has lapsed. If the preset time hasn't lapsed yet, the microcomputer detects whether a 'connected' code is generated from the modem. If the connected code is detected, the microcomputer informs the user that the connection has been successfully made. Then the microcomputer judges whether an 'SVD communication end' icon is pushed or the terminal gets changed into an on-hook state. In case that the SVD communication end icon is pushed or the terminal gets changed into the on-hook state, the microcomputer resets the register of the modem so that a 'no carrier' code can be generated to the other party. Then the microcomputer ends the connection and stores graphic data in a memory.
