The invention relates to a manual machine tool used to machine surfaces, comprising a vibrating plate (12) which is suspended on a housing (19) by means of elastic vibrating elements (11) and an electromotive eccentric drive (17) which is accommodated in said housing and sets the vibrating plate (12) into orbital vibrating movements. In order to provide a relatively flat, short housing which can be handled in a manner similar to that of a handle block, the coupling point (30) between the eccentric drive (17) and the vibrating plate (121) is located in the vicinity of the front edge (121) of the vibrating plate (121). The elastic vibrating elements (11) are engaged in the vicinity of the rear edge (122). The vibrating plate (12) is fixed to the housing (10) in the area between the coupling point (30) and the points of engagement (31) of the vibrating elements (11) by means of a movement translator which is flexible on one side and which transforms the orbital movement of the vibrating plate (12) produced at the coupling point (30) into an orbital movement in the opposite direction at the points of engagement (31).
