Object recognition method in which a first value of an object (15-31) is determined independently of ambient conditions using sensor apparatus (35), then further values of the object are determined that depend on ambient conditions using a second sensor apparatus (37) with the first determined value used to match the values determined using second or further sensor apparatuses. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for carrying out the above method. The device comprises a first laser scanner (35) for determination of condition independent object measurement values and further video camera detection systems (37).
