The invention relates to a domestic appliance for washing or drying laundry. Such domestic appliances are usually provided with a drawer (3) for the detergent or the condensate mounted in the upper zone thereof whose front is linked with a three-dimensional grip plate (4). During operation of the machine said grip plate is accommodated in a recess so as to be at least substantially flush with the user panel (2) disposed on front of the machine. In order to provide a child safety device, a detent shoulder (9) is mounted on the frame of the recess and a bar (8) is held in the detent position in the rear cavity of the grip plate (4) by the action of a spring (15). A lock holds the bar (8) in the non-detent position when a lock slide (10) is in the locking position.
