Diamines represented by the general formula [1]; polyimide precursors and polyimides produced by using the diamines as one of the raw materials; and liquid crystal aligning agents containing the precursors and/or the polyimides: [1] wherein R<1> is a trivalent organic group; X<1> and X<2> are each a divalent organic group; X<3> is an alkyl or fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 22 carbon atoms, or a cyclic group selected from among aromatic rings, aliphatic rings, heterocycles, and rings and cycles derived therefrom by substitution; and n is an integer of 2 to 5.
