The through-flow heater has a metal flow pipe (1) for a fluid or gas and a heating conductor carrier (10), extending in the axial direction, which is pressed against the outside of a flattened central section of the flow pipe. The heating conductor carrier encloses an elliptical flow pipe cross-section and has a cylindrical outer surface (11) supporting a wound heating conductor (12) enclosed by a metal oxide mantle (20) with an outer metal mantle (25).
