Device (2) for determination of the absolute medium thickness comprises an arrangement with at least one piezo-electric element (6) with first and second ends and an arrangement (8) for calculating the absolute medium thickness. One end of the piezo- electric element is in contact with the calculating arrangement, while the other is used to sample the medium height in two positions. Independent claims are made for methods for determining the absolute thickness of a print medium, and for detection of the wrong kind of print medium for the printer.
