The present invention provides a dual coaxial data and DC power transmission system that exceeds transmission distances possible using conventional Cat-5 cable, The coaxial cable (20A-C) couples to a converter (302) to convert the coaxial data to differential data. The differential data is then transmitted to a switch (306) or other network device, which is in communication with a local destination (28) using Cat-5 cable (26). A converter (310) further receives differential data from the switch (306) or other network device, converts it to coaxial data, and transmits the coaxial data to the coaxial cable (20A-C). In one embodiment a converter (310) may further include an amplifier (438) to boost the coaxial data power transmitted to the coaxial cable (20A-C). the present invention integrates power distribution throughout the coaxial cables (20A-C) to remote sites. The shield (426) of one coaxial cable (420) may be the positive polarity and the shield (450) of a second coaxial cable (444) may be the negative polarity of the system power. The converters (302, 310) further receive and transmit system power between the coaxial cable (20A-C) and switches (24A-C, 36A-C) or other network devices. The disclosed invention, therefore, integrates power and data into a single system for use in a Network Area Network (10) environment.
