A method for modifying a porous mechanical component (24,26) by using an ER or MR substance (10) including the steps of providing at least one porous metal component having a porosity sufficient to receive the MR substance within a plurality of pores, and impregnating the component with the MR substance. The movement of the MR substance due to outside forces relative to the component is then resisted by applying a constant minimal modulating charge to the MR substance and the porous metal component.
