A conveyor roller assembly comprising a support (13, 15) through which the roller assembly can be fixed in use, a hollow, a generally cylindrical roller shell (14) carried for rotation about its longitudinal axis on said support (13, 15), an electrical generator (39) housed within said roller shell (14) and driven thereby by rotation of the shell to produce an electrical output, a brake (48.52) within said roller shell and operable to brake rotation of said shell relative to said support (13, 15), a speed sensor within said shell for sensing the speed of rotation of said shell relative to said support (13, 15), and, an actuator (43, 46, 67) powered by the electrical output of said generator (39) when said speed sensor detects that the speed of rotation of said shell relative to said support (13, 15) exceeds a predetermined value, to effect operation of said brake to brake rotation of the shell. <IMAGE>
