A purpose of this invention is to decrease power consumption and to prolong the standby time when a user does not need to check the display unit in a radio communication apparatus. A distance sensor (37) in an interface part (3) outputs a signal to a distance detector (21a) in a base band part (2). The signal includes data about a distance between the sensor and an object around the apparatus. The distance detector (21a) outputs a signal for controlling a LCD (34) to a LCD control unit (25). The LCD control unit (25) turns a LCD (34) off or on based on the signal.
