PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an elevator door capable of securing a constant sensing distance at all times regardless of the degree of door opening of an elevator car. SOLUTION: A sensing unit 30 equipped with a light emitting element having a certain light emission range in the direction approximately at a right angle to the horizontal axis of each door (angleα) and a light receiving element to receive the light when the light from the light emitting element is reflected by an object to be sensed is installed at the end of safety shoe 25a/25b of doors 20d-20g installed at the doorway of the elevator car in such a way as capable of being opened and closed. Because the effective length L of sensing by this unit 30 is set in the direction in which the light emission range of the light emitting element is approximately at a right angle to the horizontal axis of the door, it remains constant at all times regardless of the degree of door opening. Accordingly the sensing distance during the door being closed will be within the effective length L which is constant, and any person who wants to get on the elevator car can easily be sensed and the door be opened without risk of undeliberately sensing the people, objects, etc., existing remotely from the door.
