PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder in which occurrence of jam is suppressed. SOLUTION: The paper feeder comprises a feeding portion 7 that is brought into contact with loaded sheets S for feeding a sheet S one by one with friction force, a feeding sensor 9 for detecting the sheet S downstream the feeding portion 7, and a control portion 13 for controlling the driving of the feeding portion 7. When the feeding sensor 9 does not detect the sheet S within a predetermined time since the feeding of the sheet has started, the control portion 13 makes the feeding portion 7 halt the feeding. After a predetermined time has passed from the halt, the control portion 13 makes the feeding portion 7 start feeding a sheet again.
