A method and an apparatus for controlling a security mode in a radio network controller are provided to minimize a failure probability for setting an encoding algorism, thereby raising a success probability for connecting a call. A method for controlling a security mode in a radio network controller includes the steps of: receiving the capability information with executable security mode information of a mobile terminal from the mobile terminal requesting at least one service(S504); receiving all available security modes from at least one core network domain having a circuit switched domain and a packet switched domain, corresponding to a type of the requested service(S506); and determining the security mode corresponding to the capability information among the received available security modes as a service security mode(S508). |
