A mechanical draft direct/indirect cooling tower is provided to prevent airborne debris from entering water contained in a collection sump by forming an inclined wall at an inner side of the sump. A mechanical draft direct/indirect cooling tower comprises at least one direct section(90) having a plurality of filling sheets(93) and a fan(24). Fluid is distributed over the filling sheet. The fan draws air into the cooling tower across the filling sheet. The fluid distributed over the filling sheet falls into a collection sump(30). The collection sump has a rectangular shape having two parallel end walls including a front wall(14) and a rear wall(16). The collection sump is provided with two parallel side walls(20,22), at least two sloped bottoms(12,18) and a drain. The sloped bottom has a compound slope on at least one of the side walls, and a first part located above an operating sump water level.
