PURPOSE: A light unit using point light source and a liquid crystal display using the light unit are provided to improve definition by decreasing the unevenness of luminance. CONSTITUTION: A light unit comprises a point light source(2); a reflecting plate reflecting light emitted from the point light source, to emit generally band-shaped light; and a rectangular plate-shaped light guide(3) receiving the light emitted from the reflecting plate, through a facet, and reflecting and refracting the light received through the facet, using a prism surface(6) having recesses and projections and forming a plurality of linear parallel ridge lines, so that planar light is emitted from a light applied surface opposite the prism surface. The point light source is arranged only at an end of the facet of the plate-shaped light guide at which the angle between the facet and the ridge lines is obtuse.
