PURPOSE: A method for operating a proxy ARP(Address Resolution Protocol) using a virtual ARP packet is provided to reduce delay for a VLAN traffic and the load of a CPU by minimizing routing, generated when a traffic is between different VLANs, through a virtual ARP request in a VLAN environment composed of an IP subnet using a proxy ARP and making it switched through a switch fabric. CONSTITUTION: A source host, of which the MAC(Media Access Control) address is connected to an arbitrary port(x), broadcasts an ARP request packet in order to transmit data to a host that belongs to another VLAN. At this moment, the fact that the MAC address of the source host is connected to the port(x) is registered in a MAC table. A proxy ARP server, receiving the ARP request packet, makes a virtual ARP request packet containing the MAC address and IP address of the source host, instead of its own MAC address, and transmits it to a destination host. Receiving the virtual ARP request packet, the destination host puts its own MAC address and IP address into an ARP response packet and directly transfers it to the source host through a switching fabric.
