The frame member, e.g. a plastic or aluminum extrusion or of wood, and especially for a door or window in a lightweight structure, has a basic L-shaped cross-section with one side (17) supported by the edge of an opening and the other (18) acting as a stop for the opening frame (8). The underside of the frame member has a projecting flange (21) that fits against the outer edge of the opening, and a covering strip (23) projecting in line with its outer surface (24) to form a channel (25) enclosing the edge of a facing panel (4).
