PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape excellent in recording and reproducing characteristics and suitable for larger capacity. SOLUTION: In the magnetic tape produced by forming a magnetic layer 2 on a nonmagnetic flexible substrate 1 and by forming a back coat layer 3 on the opposite surface of the substrate 1 to the magnetic layer forming surface, a carbon film is formed on the back coating layer 3 and the proportion of H/(C+H) in the carbon film is controlled to 30 to 50 atomic %.
