PURPOSE: A method for cooling a hot steel product is provided to improve cooling capability and cooling efficiency by coating a coating material on the surface of the hot steel product before cooling of the hot steel product, thereby supplementing cooling effect in the process of separation of the coating material due to heat stress. CONSTITUTION: In a method for water cooling a hot steel product formed by heat treatment or rolling process, the method for cooling the hot steel product is characterized in that a coating layer is formed by coating a coating material on the surface of the hot steel product before the hot steel product formed by the heat treatment or rolling process(10) passes through a water cooling process(20), and the coating layer is separated by heat stress during the cooling process(20) so that the hot steel product is cooled as the coating layer is passing through vapor barrier, wherein the method further comprises a coating process(30) for coating the coating material before the heat treatment or rolling process(10), or selectively comprises a coating process(40) after the heat treatment or rolling process(10) and before a cooling process(20), and wherein the coating material is a material roughening the surface of the hot steel product, thereby promoting separation of the coating layer by the vapor barrier.
