PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record a broadcast program by selecting a standard mode or long time mode of a tape at recording depending on a main program part and a CM part of the program. SOLUTION: When a microcomputer 13 receives a CM discrimination signal from a CM discrimination circuit 12, the microcomputer 13 outputs a control signal to control the setting of the long time mode to a motor drive circuit 14, a magnetic head changeover switch circuit 7, and a control pulse read write circuit 16 so as to shift the tape running to the long time mode. The microcomputer 13 receives a discrimination signal from the CM discrimination circuit 12 at a point of time when a main program starts and controls the tape running so as to return to the standard mode. In the case of reproduction, a control pulse head 4 reproduces a control pulse signal recorded on the magnetic tape 1 and the microcomputer 13 receives the reproduced control pulse signal through the control pulse read write circuit 16 to discriminate whether the mode is the standard mode or the long time mode and reproduces the program in the discriminated mode.
