PURPOSE: Provided are a novel biphenyldicarboxylate derivative of the formula(1) and a method for manufacturing the same. The novel biphenyldicarboxylate derivative is useful for improvement of liver function and treatment of hepatitis. CONSTITUTION: A novel biphenyldicarboxylate derivative is characteristically represented by the formula(1), wherein M1 and M2 are the same or different, and individually represent alkali-metal atom. The derivative is selected from disodium 4,4'-dimethoxy-5,6,5'6'-dimethylenedioxy biphenyl dicarboxylate, dipotassium 4,4'-dimethoxy-5,6,5'6'-dimethylenedioxy biphenyl dicarboxylate, and potassium sodium 4,4'-dimethoxy-5,6,5'6'-dimethylenedioxy biphenyl dicarboxylate.
