First and second drive surfaces (24,26) are fixed to base plaque. Transversal components of first and second drive forces (FG,FD) are communicated along single axis. First and second drive motors (16,18) are mounted on base plaque, and placed so that respective components of forces directed transversely to platen carriage are communicated to carriage in opposite directions.
