PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a laser oscillator or a laser amplifier, utilizing stimulated emission transition between two energy levels higher than the ground level, in which amplification operation can be effected over a wider wavelength band, by shifting the gain peak wavelength of the laser amplifier or the oscillation wavelength of the laser oscillator to the long wavelength side. SOLUTION: The laser oscillator or laser amplifier comprises a first pumping power supply utilizing a gain medium added with a rare earth element and using stimulated emission transition between two energy levels of rare earth element ions higher than the ground level as a laser upper level and a laser lower level, to form an inverted distribution between these two levels, and a second pumping power supply for pumping the ions from the ground level to the laser lower level with a wavelength different from the that of the first pumping light. |
